Understanding the role of an I.T. employee: As an employer, not knowing what your IT staff’s actual position is could cost you a lot of money, especially if the employee is doing far more than you thought.

I used to work as an operations manager for an organization that taught IT employees for major league teams. We experienced other concerns after investing a lot of effort in planning and implementing a curriculum and then teaching the individuals in question.

We began to receive calls and letters loaded with complaints and unhappiness after a few weeks, sometimes days, we noticed something quite basic when we began our detailed investigations.

The Investigation

Here is what we uncovered using an illustration after performing a series of interviews and surveys.

Peter is a member of the IT department of firm X. According to firm X, they require qualified individuals to handle their website’s infrastructure. Peter goes through a two-month intense training program centered on his employment function with us before being sent to firm X. After a few days, firm X sent us an email expressing their dissatisfaction with the new employee we had educated for them.

By the time we finished our investigation, we had discovered that firm X’s dissatisfaction stemmed from a network service interruption. An internal network and server problem prevented access to certain internal services. Peter was unable to diagnose and remedy the problem.

The Difference in I.T. Job Roles/Responsibilities

Yes, Peter is a computer programmer. However, he does not have a background in network or systems management. He manages and develops websites.

We started having physical and email communication orientation with employers about what they desired as a result of this. We had to devote time to creating questionnaires and surveys that would help us better understand their organization’s needs and provide appropriate advice.

Everything went back to normal as soon as we embraced this strategy.

“As an employer, not understanding what the actual job of your IT staff is could actually cost you, especially when the employee is doing considerably more than you would ever imagine,” says the first paragraph. We were compensated every time we had to train new employees. Due to a lack of understanding of what precise roles and duties were necessary, the company experienced service disruptions that had a detrimental impact on the business.

During the time we were resolving issues, Peter was removed from firm X. Consider him in a more sensitive position, such as a cyber security officer. His absence could have exposed the corporation to future security breaches, potentially resulting in larger damages.

Another point I’d like to make is that IT is a very broad profession, and only a few people can practice and operate in numerous areas at the same time. For example, I am an IT professional with expertise in website development, network administration, systems administration, systems technician, cybersecurity, UI/UX & graphics, animation & video production, HR, and project management, to name a few.

This means that, inside any firm, I can contribute to a variety of other departments and help them solve problems or achieve their objectives. The situation is different for someone who simply works as a systems technician or UI/UX designer.

While I am able to contribute well beyond my original obligations and duties, the bulk of others are not.

Furthermore, as an employer, it is critical to take the time to ask direct supervisors or other personnel within the organization/business who work closely with such persons, questions about their job role or responsibilities, especially when you do not fully understand how he or she contributes to the success of your company/business. You can be sitting on someone extremely valuable without even realizing it.

  • Before you go out and hire someone, figure out what IT responsibilities your company or organization requires.
  • Recognize that information technology is a very vast field. While a select number are able to perform in numerous roles, most are unable to do so.
  • A performance review from the person’s direct supervisor and other departmental teams that deal closely with such individuals will help you see things more clearly if you don’t see and comprehend how your IT personnel is assisting your organization/business.
